Microsoft Surface Go pre-order starts in India: Price, specifications

With an aim to take on the Apple iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, Microsoft on Saturday brought its smallest and affordable Surface Go device to India. Microsoft launched the Surface Go globally earlier this year.

The new Microsoft Surface Go can be pre-ordered from 12:00 pm today exclusively via Flipkart. Microsoft Surface Go starts at Rs 38,599 for the 4GB RAM plus 64GB onboard storage. The Surface Go also comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage which will be available at Rs 50,999.

The Surface Go Type cover in black can be purchased at Rs 8,699, while the Signature Type cover will retail at Rs 11,799.

Microsoft Surface Go specifications

Microsoft Surface Go features a 10-inch PixelSense display with 1800x1200 pixels resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio. The 2-in-1 device comes with the Surface Pen which has 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. Under the hood of the Surface Go runs the 7th Generation Intel Pentium Gold Processor 4415Y. Microsoft promises up to nine hours of battery life on the Surface Go.

The 2-in1 tablet comes with Surface Connect for charging and docking, USB-C 3.1 for data, video, and charging, a headphone jack and a microSD card reader for storage expansion.

In the camera department, the Surface Go features a 5-megapixel HD camera and rear auto-focus 8-megapixel HD camera, along with dual microphones.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 Series Leaks

A new Xiaomi phone with model number variants such as M1901F7E, M1901F7T and M1901F7C has been certified by 3C authority in China. Since these phones are equipped with 5V/2A charging, it is speculated to arrive as the Redmi 7 smartphone in the coming year.

The 3C listing of a smartphone only confirms the charging rate the smartphone may support. The 10W charging supported by M1901F7E, M1901F7T and M1901F7C models suggests that it could be an affordable smartphone from the company.

In the previous month, Xiaomi M1901F9T and M1901F9E smartphones were approved by 3C. It revealed that these models also carried support for 10W charging. Xiaomi is yet to launch the Redmi Note 6 Pro in China. Hence, it is speculated that M1901F9T and M1901F9E could the Redmi Note 6 Pro variants. In China, the smartphone is expected to launch with Redmi Note 6 moniker just as the predecessor phone was introduced as Redmi Note 5. Just like the international model, the Redmi Note 6 retail package will include a 10W charger. However, the handset may carry support for 18W fast charging.

The newly found M1901F7E, M1901F7T and M1901F7C models are expected to launch after the Redmi Note 6. Hence, it could be one of the phones from the Redmi 7 series which may include phones like Redmi 7, Redmi 7 and Redmi 7 Pro. There is no information available on these phones.

Xiaomi phones that were released in this year had “M18” included in the start of their monikers. The above-mentioned devices have “M19” in their names which indicates that these phones could be heading for a release in the year 2019. Hence, the Redmi Note 6 and Redmi 7 series will be get unleashed in the first quarter of the coming year. These phones are expected to soon appear on TENAA to leak their entire specifications. Since there is no concrete evidence to confirm on the names of the newly certified Xiaomi models, it is advisable to digest the report with a grain of salt.

We can see why some people would be worried by this threatening sounding email, but not so fast --- clicking on the update account link will take you to a site that asks you to supply your credit card number, address and other personal info-- a big red flag.

An Ohio Police department reported that people who don't even have Netflix accounts have gotten this email too.

Netflix has noted these users should beware of these kind of targeted phishing attempts and remember an official Netflix email will not ask for personal info such as credit card number, Social Security number or your account password.

If you think you've gotten one of these phishing emails or texts, you can forward it to phishing@netflix.com.

Also if you've opened a suspicious link and provided any of your personal details, Netflix recommends you immediately change your password and update your password on any websites you used the same email and password for. You should also contact your bank if you entered any payment information that might be compromised.

Paytm Laptop Assured Buyback

Paytm Mall’s new ‘Assured Buyback Scheme’ covers best-selling laptops from all major brands, including Acer, Apple, Asus, Dell, and Lenovo. Priced at Rs 499, it’s claimed to be the most affordable buyback scheme currently available in the market and offers doorstep pickup facility for laptops in more than 50 cities across India.

The ‘Assured Buyback Scheme’ has been launched in partnership with Servify. Customers who opt for the program and purchase laptops via Paytm Mall will get up to 60 percent buyback value for the first year, up to 35 percent buyback value for the second year, and up to 20 percent buyback value for the third year from the date of purchase. Oppo R & D Centres in Hyderabad

Chinese handset maker Oppo is planning to hire over 500 engineers to support its newly launched research and development (R&D) center in Hyderabad over next few years as it looks to strengthen its market presence in India by bringing more localised products and services.

The BBK Electronics-led brand has a plan to make this facility its largest out China in the coming three years. It will not just focus on handsets but will also contribute significantly towards products like smart watch and Internet of Things (IoT) products that the company plans to launch next year.

“India market is growing very fast, and we want to get deeper consumer insights to offer a better experience that will help our business,” Tasleem Arif as the Vice-President and Head of R&D at Oppo, told ET.

The new facility will initially be focusing on software related R&D, and will also provide a platform to start-ups and smaller companies to build a local ecosystem. “We are looking at partnerships across verticals to develop relevant solutions for our products,” he said.

While the executive didn't share the investment figures for the local R&D unit, he said that it is being set up as part of the global R&D strategy, which is seeing a total investment of $1.43 billion globally to work on 5G, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things.

Oppo has already hired a team of 50 people for this new facility. The executive said that the company is hiring more engineers from IITs and other institutes.

“We are concentrating on software in India, especially our Color OS. The center will initially focus on the localisation part. It will also provide inputs to the headquarters on software,” Arif added.

The executive further added that the facility will also focus on networks to make device more compatible with India’s cellular networks, besides enhancing the device performance. “The third focus is to work on camera capabilities for our products,” he said.

Oppo has been focused on the camera-centric phones category to tap young consumers in the country. Vivo, which is another BBK company, is also focused on the camera-centric phones segment.

Oppo isn’t the only Chinese company that is focusing on R&D strength in India. OnePlus, which is India’s leading flagship phone brand, has also announced its R&D center in Hyderabad and plans to make it operational by early next year.Similar to Oppo, OnePlus too wants to grow its India facility to become its largest out China in the world by focusing on software development by leveraging India’s software strength.

Analysts said that the R&D focus of these Chinese brands gels well with the manufacturing focus of mobile handset companies in India. Oppo is planning to expand its manufacturing capabilities in India by launching a bigger facility in Uttar Pradesh.

“For handset companies, the focus on setting up new R&D centres is the next natural extension of their ongoing India strategy. It also showcases their commitment to India as a growth market, and their continued intent on investing in, developing and leveraging made-in-India innovations,” Cybermedia Research’s Head- Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), Prabhu Ram said.

No auto-mapping, no bullet drops: VIT bans PUBG inside hostel rooms

Popularity of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, better known as PUBG is sky high, but Tamil Nadu’s Vellore Institue of Technology (VIT) have issued a circular banning students from playing the game in their rooms.

A photo of the circular issued by the authorities was shared on Twitter which stated: “It has come to our notice that few students are playing online games like ‘PUBG’ which is NOT PERMITTED.”

It's still unclear what exactly triggered the ban. The notice mentions hostel students being disturbed by raucous PUBG players, "disturbing the atmosphere", and supposedly gambling.

According to The Indian Express, the Chief of Wardens of VIT sent an e-mail statement to all hostellers which read,

"It has come to our notice that few students are playing online games like 'PUBG' which is NOT PERMITTED. Deposited our repeated instructions, hostellers are violating our instructions by playing online games inside the rooms which disturbs fellow roommates and spoiling the entire atmosphere of the hostel. It is strictly warned that playing online games and betting for such games are totally prohibited in VIT. Hence, the defaulters will be dealt seriously under VIT CODE OF CONDUCT. Students are asked to concentrate on physical games or sports and give more importance to their career growth."

Social media users criticised the circular and lashed out at the college for interfering in their personal life. Responding to the criticism, Associate Chief Warden of the boys' hostel, R Mohanasundaram told The Indian Express that the circular was issued around Friday last week. He added that the game has become an 'addiction' for students.

Micromax smartphone launching in India on December 18 will come with quad cameras

Indian handset maker Micromax is all set to launch a new smartphone in India on December 18. We don’t know the name of this smartphone yet, but, Micromax has already revealed that this smartphone will come with a notched display. Well now, the company has revealed some more details about its upcoming smartphone.Micromax has shared an image on Twitter which reveals that this smartphone will come with dual cameras at the back. The image shows that these dual cameras will be stacked vertically in the top-left corner. Below these cameras is the LED flash, and, there’s also a text that reads “Dual AI Camera”. Well, this does mean that the cameras on this Micromax smartphone will come with some AI-based features in tow.

The image shared by Micromax also confirms that this smartphone will come in a blue-purple gradient color. Although it’s safe to say that there will be more color options to choose from.The front of the smartphone has display notch which accommodates the earpiece as well as LED flash which should help you take brighter photos in low-light conditions. That said, it also looks like this smartphone will not only have dual cameras at the back, but on the front as well.

It also looks like the smartphone will have its power button on the right side, with the volume rocker residing on the left. However, a previous teaser image shared by Micromax showed both the volume rocker and power button located on the right side of the phone.

We are four days away from the launch, so expect Micromax to reveal more information about this smartphone by sharing teaser images on social media.
