Netflix is testing an instant replay feature

Netflix is currently testing a rewind-like function that will give users the ability to replay a specific scene more conveniently. The new tool allows people to immediately rewatch a scene without having to mess around with Netflix’s standard time bar at the bottom of the screen, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Instead, Netflix shows a pop-up notification asking if a user wants to replay a scene that just concluded. So far, this only works for Netflix’s original series, films, and select licensed content, according to the Los Angeles Times. It’s unclear if Netflix plans to roll the feature out to all 120 million-plus subscribers worldwide, but the reaction to the app on Reddit has been less than positive.

“Really messed up my immersion,” one Reddit user based in Hawaii who was watching Mowgli wrote. “So far it’s happened right after two intense scenes. Really took me out of the moment.”

“I hope this isn’t a permanent thing because it’s distracting and obnoxious,” another Reddit user wrote. “If I want to see something again, I’ll rewind it myself ... I don’t need a prompt.”

The implementation seems to be what’s bugging people most. You could imagine “hey Netflix, replay this scene” being a useful voice command, but a pop-up can take you out of the content you’re watching.

A statement from Netflix to the Los Angeles Times reiterates that scene replays is still in early testing and may not become a feature for everyone.

“We’re trying out a feature which gives Netflix members the ability to rewatch favorite scenes and memorable moments with the click of a button,” a Netflix spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times. “Right now we’re just looking to learn from it and may or may not roll it out more broadly in the future.”
